VPN Solutions

Virtual Private Networks (VPN) offers the enterprise an alternative approach to interconnecting employees, remote facilities and external business partners using the public data network of a service provider, instead of using private WAN links at each location. VPN therefore is a way of extending the functionality of the corporate network by allowing the people wherever they may be, to connect to the corporate LAN through a public data network.

The Process

A VPN creates a data tunnel between a remote client and central server on the existing public network.

The client, by means of a password or PIN creates this tunnel on authentication. After initiation of this tunnel, the data that passes to and fro on this tunnel is encrypted, by using a special hardware or software device.

The important feature of VPN is Access Control. Access Control limits the access and usage of the network to authorised users only.

This is done in two stages

Authentication, to gain access to the network - A VPN solution should be able to verify the identity of the person using the VPN. This is achieved through various authentication techniques.

Encryption, to prevent interception and eavesdropping into a VPN session - once a secure network access granted, a VPN solution protects the privacy of a data being transmitted by creating a tunnel between the VPN sites using various encryption techniques.

VPN Categories

There are typical categorised in 3 categories

Intranet - An organisation wide VPN network connecting various offices of the organisation.

Extranet - A VPN network, connecting various organisations in the supply chain with the parent organisation.

Remote - A VPN network which allows you to connect from anywhere in the world. Typically used by mobile workforce like salespeople, dealers, and customers who may access the VPN from their homes as well
